Activities — Resistencia Lanzarote

Activities

This is the living page of the protest. Every day we tell here what has been done in the park and what comes next, with the date first and the most recent at the top. The news about us also goes here, next to the activity it comes from.

Assemblies are open: to speak you raise your hand, respect whoever is talking and wait for your turn. What is decided goes into public minutes that protect the privacy of participants and of the people affected.

Next calls

Tuesday 13 October, 19:30. General Assembly in the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá. Each working group presents what it has decided, its goals and its calendar, and the assembly votes its collective support for the actions that need many people: presence at council sessions, accompaniments, mobilisations.

Monday 12 October, 19:30. Working day of the four groups (La Casa de Todas, Communication, Tenants' Union and Strike Committee). No general assembly: each group prepares the resolutions it will bring on Tuesday.

Every day. The space in the park is open day and night. People are needed for the shifts, to inform passers-by and so that those who have been up all night can rest.

What has happened

Sunday 11 October — Popular “enyesque” for housing

An open day from morning to evening in the park: a crochet workshop (11:00), children's storytelling (12:00), a shared meal at 13:30 with whatever each person brought (lentils, chickpeas, vegetable paella, snacks, fruit), the “Tocar las lapas” limpet-shell workshop (15:00), the “Canarian letters” workshop (16:00) and the talk “Take care, comrade: a small guide to keeping your sanity” (17:00). In the evening, a reading from Alerta de patera with its author, and a small library that grows with what people bring. Cardboard was requested for new signs and, late at night, the Polka for housing arrived, which is now sung in the park.

Saturday 10 October — VI Citizens' Assembly

One week of mobilisation and the sixth day of protest in the park. With rain halfway through, the assembly agreed to carry on, to create a commission to reorganise the space (rest, food, meeting and information areas), to open a social guidance point, to devote Monday to the working groups, to support the general strike of 11 November, to take the demands to the sessions of Arrecife's council and the island Cabildo, and to create a wiki and a community archive to keep the memory of all this. Public minutes of the VI Assembly (PDF, in Spanish). That same night the band Vera Fauna let the Assembly's banners be shown during their concert at Arrecife en Vivo.

Friday 9 October — An eviction stopped

The Assembly accompanied a family that could lose their home. The eviction was halted under the housing decree. That is the reason for all this: that nobody has to face the threat of losing their home alone.

Thursday 8 October — The by-law and the fines

The local police warned that the park is a work by César Manrique and a listed heritage site, and fines of up to 4,500 euros were mentioned. The answer was the same as on day one: it is not a camp, it is a peaceful gathering to claim a right, protected by article 21 of the Constitution. We carry on.

Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 October — The first assemblies in the park

Daily meetings, working groups and Wednesday's assembly at 20:00 to decide the next actions. Neighbours and shops in the centre started bringing coffee, food, access to toilets and whatever was needed.

Monday 5 October — The protest begins

After the rally, Sunday's march and two assemblies, the first tents go up under the pergola of the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá and the group La Casa de Todas is born to keep the space going.
